Classical Studies Academy "Science Wizard"

to Receive the Connecticut Science Teacher Association's "Excellence in Elementary Science Teaching Award"

Mary Servino, Science Wizard at Classical Studies Academy has been selected to receive the CT Science Teachers Association’s “Excellence in Elementary Science Teaching Award” for 2010-2011.  She will be honored by the CSTA at a reception and awards banquet on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the Yale Peabody Museum and New Haven Lawn Club, respectively.

Helen Giles, principal of Classical Studies Academy talks about Ms. Servino in action:

When you walk into Mrs. Servino’s classroom the students are buzzing with excitement as they work collaboratively to answer the hypothesis of the day.  Vocabulary words grace the board while she facilitates the activity at hand.  She provides a student-centered environment where the students acquire the knowledge needed to answer the questions that have been posed for the lesson.  She embodies the qualities of an effective teacher as evidenced in her interactions with students socially, as well as, academically.  Mrs. Servino is a dedicated teacher that embraces the fact that all children can learn, and she implements and facilitates lessons to ensure that quality learning takes place.  Congratulations, Mary!

Goes to Work

A New Member of the District Makes

a Unique Impact on the School Community

Bella P. Sanchez is a hit and currently "going to work" with the parents of Monica Bolbotowski's kindergarten students at Tisdale School.

Well, that’s Bella the Bear.

Bella P. Sanchez is a stuffed bear designed to involve parents in the BPS district, allowing them to showcase their diverse careers for the entire school population.

Parents are encouraged to take turns each week bringing Bella to work with them.  They are asked to photograph Bella at work (i.e.: with a nurse’s cap, police badge, hard hat, a truck, school bus, etc.), and to write with their child a brief essay of what Bella saw  and experienced while visiting the workplace.

So far, Bella has experienced a position as a cook with a Dad, and she is currently working in the medical profession with a Mom.

Monica Bolbotowski has reported that the journal entries are delightful. A display case at the school details Bella's adventures including photos of her "on the job" and features a "map" that indicates where in the city Bella has been!

Bella fits into the NNPS model as it meets a couple of the "6 keys":

#1 Parenting (assist families with parenting skills and settin home conditions to support children as students and assists schools to understand families)

#2 Communicating (conduct effective communications from school-to-home about school programs and student progress

#4 Learning at Home (involve famiies with their childrens' homework and other curriculum related activities and decisions).
