National
Urban Alliance for Effective Education to be
Featured on CNN
Teachers
and students in Bridgeport, Conn., featured
in a story about program that
brings them together for professional development
On May 19,
The National Urban Alliance for Effective
Education (NUA) will be featured on CNN’s
Anderson Cooper
360. In one of its most innovative
school improvement programs, the NUA builds
stronger teacher-student relationships by
involving students in their teachers’ professional
development.
This
unique educational approach, which has been
featured in Education
Week and The New York
Times, uses student
feedback to improve instruction and give students
a powerful voice in their own
education.
“Teachers
and students come out ahead when they have the
meaningful interaction that CNN’s team captured
during its visit,” said Yvette Jackson, the NUA’s
CEO and the author of a new book that explains the
lessons and science behind this work, Pedagogy of
Confidence. “I hope
educators who view this story will see the high
intellectual potential of all students and the
need for a new pedagogy which improves
teacher-student engagement.”
The
segment will be hosted by Steve Perry, a CNN
education contributor who is the principal at
Capital
Preparatory
Magnet
School in Hartford,
Conn.
It will focus on training sessions and interviews
with teachers at Beardsley School in Bridgeport, Conn., providing
insight on what teachers learned from their
students.
NUA’s
Jackson and Eric
Cooper, president of the Syosset, N.Y.,-based
nonprofit organization, are featured in the
broadcast.
“The
students filmed by CNN are insightful and
on-point,” Cooper said. “Far too often students
are the last ones we talk to when it comes to
their own education. The student voices in this
piece show us how wrong that is and the role they
should be given in the transformation of
America’s
schools.”
The
segment is scheduled to air first on May 19 on
Anderson
Cooper 360, which begins at 10
p.m., though airing is subject to cancellation due
to breaking news. The segment also is scheduled to
be aired on CNN during the 7-8 p.m. shows on May
21 and 22. All times are Eastern
Standard.
