On Friday, November 19, 2010, the faculty and students of Luis Muñoz Marin School will celebrate Puerto Rican Heritage Career Day.  From 9am to 12pm, students, parents and faculty members of Marin immerse themselves within the Puerto Rican culture.

In order to expose scholars from various cultures to positive role models, many Puerto Rican guest speakers are invited to participate, most of whom are a product of the Bridgeport Public School System.  The intent of Marin School staff and administration is to expose students to various career options that are available, and to help them understand that, with hard work and determination, they can “Expect Great Things” of themselves.

Every year, Luis Muñoz Marin School invites speakers of various careers.  The list ranges from doctors, lawyers, teachers, police, firefighters, to the political world and the corporate environment.  The focus is to share examples of the following with scholars:

·        Discuss various professional career opportunities.

·        Take steps towards reaching professional goals.

·        Take pride in being Puerto Rican/Hispanic.

·        Sharing experiences of professionals who attended school in Bridgeport.

·        Describe teachers who made an impact in their lives and why.

·        Overcoming obstacles and sharing motivation for success.

·        Share experiences that attributed to the chance of success.

·        Explain the “NO DRUGS” message.

Each participant and volunteer is awarded a certificate, souvenir and is invited to enjoy an authentic Puerto Rican luncheon catered by Mrs. Judith Castro, former Bilingual Special Education Teacher at Marin School.

All efforts for the day’s events are geared towards sending a positive message to students, and keeping in mind the contribution that each speaker makes in shaping and molding the future of today’s children and tomorrow’s potential leaders.

“I have been an active participant for this great event for 11 years and have been hostess for 7 years,” says Miriam Perez, Teacher and Diversity Committee Chairperson at Marin School.  “It always amazes me to see the many satisfied faces of the professionals that enter our doors and share a part of themselves with our staff and students.  What is even more amazing is that some of these faces belong to former students who year after year return to contribute back to their community.”

The mission of the Bridgeport Public Schools and its supporting community is to graduate all students “college ready” and prepared to succeed in life.  For more information about Bridgeport Public Schools visit our website at www.bridgeportedu.com.
