Beardsley Students to Perform OperaBeardsley School students will perform “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” a one hour opera composed by Gian-Carlo Menotti, on Thursday November 29. Performances will be held at 10:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the school, located at 500 Huntington Road in Bridgeport.
The opera production is co-sponsored by the Social Justice Council of the Unitarian Church in Westport. The performance will bring the complete opera experience with a full orchestra to the children of the Beardsley School. Volunteers from the Unitarian Church in Westport have read the story of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” to students in grades 2-6 to prepare them for the opera performance. “The storyteller was very animated and my students were completely engaged in the story. They look forward to the opera performance,” said Beardsley School third grade teacher Peggy Lynch.
“Amahl and the Night Visitors” is a story about the three kings from Christian legend who seek shelter from twelve year old Amahl and his mother, and the villagers who come to pay respect to the visiting kings. This story appeals to children because it is told by the young boy, Amahl.
This production is sponsored by the American Chamber Orchestra, the Unitarian Church in Westport, GE Corporation, the Jean and Julien Levy Foundation for the Arts and the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation.
Gala performances will also be held at the Unitarian Church in Westport on Saturday, December 1 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to benefit the Bridgeport Public Education Fund, Inc. For more information, please contact Carl Serbell at (203) 222-7190 or cserbell@yahoo.com.
Central High School Shows its SpiritCentral seniors raise money for Support a Charity Day.
Central High School celebrated Spirit Week from November 13 to November 20. Themes for the week, which were chosen by the Class of 2008, were Rep Your Class, Team Jersey Day, Twin Day, Retro Day, Support a Charity Day, and Red and Black Day. In the tradition of Spirit Week, Central ended the festivities on Red and Black Day with a spirited pep rally.
One of the highlights of the event was Support a Charity Day, in which Central’s students and staff were given the opportunity to donate to different charities. By means of generous donations, the Class of 2008 raised enough money to make donations in the amount of $100 to each of the following charities: American Diabetes Association, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Epilepsy Foundation of CT, and Kids in Crisis. Donations will be made on behalf of the Senior Class and Central High School.
The Central High School Class of 2008 thanks all of its supporters and advisors for making this year’s Spirit Week a success.
Central dancers move to the groove of school spirit.
