Bridgeport Students Showcase Projects for CSI: Bridgeport

Yesterday, Bridgeport high school students, who participated in five weeks of investigation through the summer program CSI: Bridgeport, showcased their coursework at Bridgeport Regional Aquaculture School.

CSI: Bridgeport is an inter-district summer science enrichment program that provides a multifaceted, interdisciplinary medium for students to develop their science inquiry skills. “CSI: Bridgeport appeals to the detective in students,” said program director Joseph Carmen.  Monroe students also participated in the program.

Throughout the course, students performed various experiments through which they learned about forensic science essentials, such as the basic rules and laws of evidence, how to process a crime scene, fingerprint analysis and matching, hair and fiber analysis and blood typing and spatter.  The junior sleuths solved cases such as murder mysteries and kidnappings.  Career paths in forensic science and crime scene analysis were brought to life through guest speakers, including a senior military policeman, FBI Cybercrime Task Force special agent and nephrologist.

“The class was a lot of fun,” said Tamara Michelin, a junior at Central Magnet. “Now when I watch CSI on television I understand what they are doing and notice all the things I’ve learned in class.”

Recently, students conducted their final project, which was a mock murder scene investigation.  Upon receiving a background briefing, classmates put their newfound knowledge into practice and worked together to process evidence, determine which evidence to test, conduct tests, and collect and analyze the data to solve the crime.

The results of the final projects were interactive and included informative posters, evidence analysis stations, a CSI scavenger hunt, and a short film. “The students have worked extremely hard this summer and enjoyed showing their coursework,” Carmen said.

 High Schools set Registration Dates
High school students who register are eligible to win a Modell's gift card

Bridgeport Public School officials announced today that high school registration dates are set for Aug. 13-21 for Harding and Bassick High Schools and Aug. 20-24 for Central High School.   Registration will take place from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the respective high schools. Any student who registers at their respective High School before the first day of school can enter to win a gift card to Modell's.

"The purpose of these dedicated registration times is to reduce the number of new students who attempt to register on the first day of school," said Doug Hiscox, Assistant Superintendent of Bridgeport Public Schools. "It's important that all new students register before school begins in order for students to have a class schedule on the first day of school because learning begins on the first day."

The first day of school for 9th grade students is Tues., Aug 28 and the first day of school for 10th -12th grade students is Wed., Aug. 29.

In an effort to encourage attendance on the first day and throughout the school year, Bridgeport Public Schools have developed a Back to School Campaign. Any high school student who attends the first day of school and continues with perfect attendance until the 90 th day of school (1st semester) will be entered to win a laptop. There will be one laptop available at each high school.  Laptops donated by the GE Foundation.  Additionally, ALL students who have perfect attendance up until the 90 th day of the school year will receive a family pack to a Bridgeport Sound Tigers game.  Tickets donated by Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
