Energizer Funds Grant to Promote LiteracyEnergizer has awarded a $10,000 grant to Bridgeport Public Schools Media Specialist for a new “Pocketful of Playaways” project. The project will help enhance students’ literacy skills by providing increased asccess to up-to-date school library materials at the elementary level.
Grant funds will be used to create a district-wide lending library that will promote reading for meaning through the use of “Playaways,” which are audio books preloaded into a digital player that resembles an MP3 player. These audio players are accompanied by a paired book and will help with the development of listening skills while promoting critical reading skills such as fluency, comprehension, and decoding. Playaways will be purchased from Follet.
The district-wide lending library will be housed at the JFK Media Center under the direction of Kathleen Bain, JFK media specialist and “Pocketful of Playaways” grant writer. Bain plans to open the library in February. Media specialists throughout the district will be able to request materials through interdistrict mail and email network.
Among other objectives of this project, “The ‘Pocketful of Playaways’ will help motivate students to read more, provide a model of fluency for students which will lead to a greater degree of comprehension, and introduce students to books at their interest level, which may be above their reading level,” Bain said. “The project will also provide authentic learning experiences for reluctant, impaired, struggling, or non-readers with the same reading experiences as their peers.”
Nearly 100 percent of the grant funds will go toward the purchase of the Playaways. Free training for media specialists and literacy consultants will be provided by Follet during regular staff meetings. The project will also support family literacy by means of parent informational sessions, which will be held at the individual school level. “Ultimately students and parents will be supported with increased access to the tools and up-to-date technology that will impact literacy learning for life,” Bain added.
Columbus School Collaborates with the Community
This year Columbus School has experienced the generosity of a variety of organizations throughout its supporting community. The following are just a few examples of community involvement:
SolMar Restaurant
Manuel Teixeira, the owner of SolMar restaurant, has generously offered free lunch on Fridays to two students from who have read the most AR books for that week. Each week, two students and two teachers from a particular grade will be invited to enjoy a tasty meal. Beginning with sixth grade, each grade level will have the opportunity to send its busy readers to dine at SolMar, which is located across the street from the school.
GE
GE will sponsor a day at the Downtown Cabaret this coming spring. All Columbus School students will enjoy a free Cabaret performance of Aladdin.
Jack and Jill Foundation
Each month, members of the Jack and Jill Foundation mentor and assist students with reading. Students read in small groups and receive extra support to enhance their reading skills. The Foundation has also donated school uniforms.
Fairfield Rotary Club
The Fairfield Rotary Club sponsors “Weekly Reader” for all students in grades 3-5. By means of this program, students have the opportunity to read grade appropriate, non-fiction literature. The Club also donates three computers each month for students who do not have their own at home.
Columbus School appreciates these generous donations of time, money, talents, and resources. With community support, Columbus School staff and students will continue to make progress and “Expect Great Things.”

Scores of students, seemingly oblivious to the cold, sang, cheered and squealed with delight as U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman on Wednesday visited the Multicultural Magnet School to unfurl a prized possession — the school's "Blue Ribbon School" flag.
Nearly two months ago, the school on the city's East End received the federal Department of Education's coveted Blue Ribbon award, one of only 275 in the nation and the only school in Connecticut to be so honored this year...
