 Garfield Offers Summer Tutoring

This summer, Garfield School offered a tutoring program to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to assist in math and reading.  Garfield's interim principal James Hodge worked with the Caroline House to develop a tutoring program for students who would not be offered the opportunity to attend summer school.  The school’s literacy coaches collaborated with sisters at the Caroline House to develop the curriculum.

Garfield’s tutoring program was featured in both the CT Post and the Boston Globe.  Read the full article at:

Westport's Academy of Dance Donates to Waltersville

Last week, Waltersville School received a $3,500 donation from Westport’s Academy of Dance.  This partnership has aided in the promotion of cultural arts at Walterville.  “The money will be used to bring performers into the school to provide our students the arts exposure necessary to form a lasting vision of what they can become and do in the future,” said Waltersville Principal Anne de Bernard.  The money will also be used to bring students to local performances.  “Waltersville hopes to use this donation as ‘seed money’ to establish a permanent cultural arts committee comprised of parents, teachers, community partners, and administrators to promote the performing arts as a central core of Waltersville's curriculum,” de Bernard explained.

Last December, six Waltersville ballerinas danced in the Academy’s annual production of the Nutcracker Ballet at Staple's High School.  The dancers were also added to the procession of angels in the 25th Anniversary show.  In addition, Principal de Bernard danced with John Dody, Principal of Staples High School, along with Dianne Farrel and her husband, in the opening party scene of the ballet.  “This combination of guest performers was included in the show as part of a fund raising strategy to create a cultural arts fund for Waltersville School,” de Bernard explained.  The recent $3,500 donation was made from the proceeds of the anniversary show, and was allocated for Waltersville in honor of its partnership.

Three years ago, Westport's Academy of Dance, under the direction of Mary Ellen Marpe, was instrumental in helping Waltersville start a comprehensive K-5 ballet program.  The Academy donated an entire dance studio to the school, including stereo systems, barres, mirrors, costumes, leotards, and flooring.  This donation also included the services of a professional contractor to install the barres and mirrors, as well as a dance architect to aid in studio design.  In conjunction with the donation, Waltersville teachers and parents painted, varnished, and implemented a dance studio in the basement of the 100 year-old building.  “Since that time, the Academy has been instrumental in coordinating volunteer dance teachers for our school that supplement our Priority Grant/MACH partnership for dance and music instruction,” de Bernard said.
