"A Day Made Better for Webster Teacher Hahn FigueroaFirst year teacher Hanh Figueroa takes a break from
class to pose with her new Office Max supplies.
Last week, Office Max team members made a surprise visit to first year Webster School teacher Hanh Figueroa’s classroom. Figueroa was awarded with bouquet of flowers, desk chair, printer, camera, and shopping cart full of $1,000 worth of Office Max supplies as part of Office Max’s “A Day Made Better” event.
Webster School Principal Marlene Roberts nominated Figueroa for this recognition. “Hanh is totally committed and dedicated to teaching,” she said. “She has certainly distinguished herself as a first year teacher and continues to do so on a daily basis.” Figueroa was not notified of her nomination and was caught by complete surprise. “I was speechless,” she said. “I felt so honored to receive such recognition as a first year teacher. The best part of all was seeing the looks on my students’ faces and how proud they were of me.”
Superintendent Dr. Ramos was also present to help celebrate. “The A Day Made Better event was so wonderful,” Principal Roberts said. “It was great having the Webster family and Dr. Ramos present to share Hanh’s moment of joy.
Figueroa is one of several teachers across the country recognized by Office Max in its “A Day Made Better” event.
Channel 12 News Visits Edison SchoolChannel 12 News' Paul Piorek conducts and experiment
with Mrs. Bartolomeo's enthusiastic second graders.Channel 12 News Weather Anchor Paul Piorek recently visited Noreen Bartolomeo’s second grade classroom at Edison School to teach them about weather and phases of the moon. During Piorek’s visit, students conducted a variety of experiments to learn about water vapor, fog, and air density. Piorek also asked the students weather related trivia questions. Students who answered correctly were either selected to conduct a mini experiment or received a Channel 12 rain gauge.
In addition to interactive experiments and weather brain teasers, two students were selected to be guest weather reporters. They were given a microphone to give a live forecast of weather conditions and the current phase of the moon while a cameraman recorded their presentation.
Piorek first visited Bartolomeo’s classroom last year after a parent contacted the station regarding its school visits. Paul Piorek came in response to the request and was pleased with the positive feedback from students. This year, he contacted Mrs. Bartolomeo directly and asked that he may come back to visit.

Multicultural Magnet was the only Blue Ribbon award recipient in Connecticut and one of only three in New England. Nationwide, 287 schools were honored with a Blue Ribbon.
Representatives of the Bridgeport school received the award Oct. 2 from Michael Sentance of the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Award honors schools for helping students achieve high levels of academic excellence and for making significant progress in decreasing the achievement gap. The honored schools generally have many students from disadvantaged backgrounds, yet their test scores are among the highest in the state.
