John Curtis, Director of Technology Education for Bridgeport Public Schools and Principal of Aquaculture School, has made it possible for one eleventh grade student from Bassick, Central, and Harding to take part in an apprentice program at Sikorsky Aircraft. Students’ names were selected by each high school’s technology department chairperson and sent to Mr. Curtis.  Students were subjected to several interviews to make sure they were truly interested in pursuing a technology oriented career after graduation.  The three finalists were then sent to Sikorsky Aircraft for final interviews and testing and were then hired as full time summer employees. 

 

After successfully completing their summer employment, the student apprentices have returned to school as seniors and will be guaranteed full time employment at Sikorsky after graduation.  As part of their employment package, these students will be afforded the opportunity to pursue a college education paid for by Sikorsky Aircraft.  This unique opportunity was previously only offered to students attending state schools.  Mr. Curtis has created a huge opportunity for Bridgeport students enrolled in the Technology Education Program complete with full time, lifetime employment, a college education, full medical, and a very large paycheck. Congratulations go to Mr. Curtis for a job well done.

 

 

Bridgeport Public Schools welcomes the 14 new math and science teachers from India. The seven math and seven science teachers have been placed in classrooms throughout Bassick, Harding, and Cesar Batalla.

 

Teachers were selected through the sponsorship of the Teachers Placement Group, which provides training, relocation, and consulting services to help schools discover highly qualified and “culturally curious” teachers from India (teachersplacement.com).  Sharon Pivirotto, Evaluation Staff Mediator for Bridgeport Public Schools, traveled to India with World Language Consultant Mary Anne Hansen, PhD to interview teaching candidates in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.  Fourteen teachers were selected among hundreds of potential candidates.

 

“I am very excited about this new program for a variety of reasons,” Pivirotto said.  "We have a highly qualified cohort of teachers who want to be here to help our students succeed.  They are extremely hard working and conscientious, and we will provide them with the tools and support they need.”

 

The new Bridgeport teachers arrived in South Carolina in late July for two and a half weeks of training through the Teachers Placement program.  Bridgeport’s teachers were joined by 65 candidates that have been placed in South Carolina.  In August, the teachers participated in Bridgeport’s New Teacher Orientation program, which prepared them to succeed both educationally and culturally in Bridgeport Public Schools.  Pivirotto is hopeful that these teachers will make a positive impact on the district.  “It’s going to be a great year,” she said.
