Winthrop Students Win CT Sun Reading Challenge
Recently fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in John Winthrop School’s Talented and Gifted Program (TAG) participated in the Read to Achieve Reading Challenge, a program sponsored by the Connecticut Sun, a WMBA professional basketball team.
Seven schools from around New Haven and New London counties participated in the challenge. Throughout the three week competition, students created reading logs, which included details of the books they were reading and the time spent reading each day. The Winthrop team, made up of 30 students, submitted their reading logs to TAG teacher Judy LaMonico, who then passed their hard work along to the CT Sun.
Of the seven schools that competed, Winthrop School was one of three schools with the highest reading average, earning each student a book along with an ice cream party hosted by the CT Sun mascot, Blaze.
“The children are so thrilled to be able to participate in this,” said Mrs. LaMonico. “It has been a meaningful experience and we are looking forward to participating again next year.”
Read to Achieve is a year-round, league-wide initiative supported by all 30 NBA teams, 13 WNBA teams, and 6 NBDL teams that promotes the value of reading and on-line literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. It is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. The program includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs and the creation of Reading and Learning centers throughout North America.
Park City Students Perform Seussical Jr.
Park City students practiced for three months to deliver the musical play Seussical Jr., based on the works of Dr. Seuss. The play was performed this past weekend, and over 100 people attended each performance. The children were amazing, and showed much talent during the show. We are so thrilled in the school's ability to give our children a chance to go beyond their normal academic schedule, and show their artistic ability. Giving these students this opportunity allowed them to reach within themselves, and discover new talents that they normally might not have known. The school's music teacher, Ms. Patterson, deserves a director's award for gathering these gifted children, and going beyond her duty. Congratulations to all the children in Park City who performed. All those who attended left the show very enlightened.

Bridgeport Public Schools Host Annual Math Meet
Last week middle school students competed in the city-wide Annual Mathematics Meet, which was held on the campus of Sacred Heart University.
“Mathematics is a topic that we shouldn’t fear. We need to use it in everyday life. If we want to have a productive business economy in Bridgeport’s future we need to continue to produce good problem solvers in our school system,” said Pedro Vazquez, Math Curriculum Specialist. “The math meet showcases some of Bridgeport’s finest math problem solvers.”
After ten rounds, the top three teams received gift certificates, trophies and calculators. This year was a close competition, with only one point separated the first and second place teams. The first place trophy and individual trophies were awarded to Winthrop School, whose team, coached by math teacher Mrs. Wendy Milson, included Parth Rana, Maurice Wallace, Raquel Moldonado, Adrian Simpson, Sherwin Yu and Daniel Nguyen.
Second place was awarded to Park City Magnet. The team was led by Kevin Tang, who answered every question in the meet correctly – a feat that has not been achieved in years. Kevin was awarded a Texas Instruments graphing calculator for this accomplishment.
Third place was presented to High Horizons Magnet School. The following schools were close behind the third place team: Multicultural Magnet School, Blackham School, Dunbar School and Longfellow School. The “Most Improved School” award this year was given to Multicultural Magnet School, which moved up five places in the standings from last year.
