On March 3, 2008 CAPT testing will begin for tenth graders in our high schools. Please review the CAPT Third Generation Handbook for Reading and Writing, which is a publication of the Connecticut State Department of Education. The Handbook will familiarize you with the CAPT Reading and Writing Tests. In addition, you can practice CAPT strategies with your tenth grader before the test. This is how to practice:

Response to Literature sub-test: see page 8 of the Handbook
.

This test will ask students to answer four questions about a short story they have not read. The exact questions that will be asked are listed on page 8. Using any short story, students can practice discussing or writing answers to these questions.

Reading for Information sub-test: See pages 11-13 of the Handbook.

On this test students are asked to read three authentic non-fiction texts, such as newspaper, magazine, or online articles. They write the answers to multiple choice and open-ended questions. The questions students will be asked are taken from the list on pages 11-13 of the Handbook. You can practice at home with news or magazine articles of 500-1,000 words.

Editing and Revising sub-test: See pages 30-31.

The Editing and Revising test asks students to correct mistakes in spelling, grammar, and usage. There is a sample test on pages 30-31 of the Handbook. Additional released tests from previous years can by found on the Connecticut State Department of Education website www.sde.ct.gov/.

Interdisciplinary Writing sub-test:. See page 15.

On page 15 of the Handbook is a description of the Interdisciplinary Writing questions and persuasive essays that must be written in response. Contemporary newspapers, magazine, and online articles of 700-1,000 words are appropriate as practice for this test.
