PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is a proactive approach to shape positive student behavior and to make the school environment a welcoming and safe place for all. The entire staff can reward students for their positive behaviors.There are four components to PBIS;
v Outcomes: academic and behavior targets that are endorsed and emphasized by students, families, and educators.
v Practices: interventions and strategies that are evidenced based.
v Data: information that is used to identify status, need for change, and effects of interventions.
v Systems: supports that are needed to enable the accurate and durable implementation of the PBIS practices.
Simply stated, it is much more effective to be proactive, and establish a system of behavioral expectations and rewards, rather than reactive, and punish a student when his/her behavior has escalated to a crisis situation.
