2018 Read Aloud Day Books
The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. has a long and unique history with the Bridgeport Board of Education. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), SVAB has historically raised money to cover program expenses while the BBOE has paid the salaries of the two staff in the School Volunteer Office. The value of the total hours donated by volunteers this past year is over a half a million dollars. Because of severe budget constraints, the BBOE will not be paying the staff salaries for the 2018-2019 school year.
After 51 years of providing support for the children of the Bridgeport Public Schools, the Board of Directors is committed to continuing the mission and work of the organization. They have, therefore, made the decision to use the organization’s savings to pay for these two positions for the upcoming year. This will allow SVAB to continue offering the same level of service to the children but will essentially deplete our reserves. At the same time, the Board of Directors will be working on a strategic plan to assure the ongoing health of the organization, which will include strong advocacy efforts at local and state levels to restore BBOE funding for these position.
We encourage all supporters to continue their volunteer activities, provide financial support and join us in advocating for our future.

The School Volunteer Association sponsors an annual, citywide
Read Aloud Day each fall during which over 600 volunteers are recruited to read enjoyable children’s books to every pre-kindergarten through sixth grade class in the Bridgeport Public Schools. Many of these participants join us as ongoing volunteers reading books to classes and tutoring or mentoring individual students throughout the remainder of the school year.
