(General Educational Development)/
High School Equivalency
The focus of the GED (General Educational Development) program is to prepare students to pass the computer-based GED test. Preparation to complete the GED test includes problem-solving skills in the subject areas of: Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. Classroom instruction is supplemented by computer-assisted instruction with a GED interactive computer program. The GED Exam is a consists of four separate tests in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.
What You Need to Know
- The GED exam is offered in both English and Spanish.
- All students take a placement test to determine the appropriate class level.
- Classes are available at all levels.
- You are eligible to take the official State GED Exam if:
- You are 17 or 18 years old and have officially withdrawn from school for at least 6 months.
- If you are 17, you must submit a withdrawal form signed by a parent or guardian.
- Those who pass the GED test are awarded a Connecticut State High School Diploma.
- Day classes are held at the Adult Learning Center from Monday–Thursday.
- Evening classes are held at Central High School from Monday–Thursday.

**Anyone registering for the GED exam must provide proof of passing all four practice tests. You must have a copy of your scores before registering for the GED exam.
GED Exam Information Eligibility
To register for the GED test, an individual must meet the following requirements:
Documentation to Take the GED® Test in Connecticut
All test-takers must provide proof of identity and Connecticut residency. Individuals with a current and valid State of Connecticut-issued photo identification can use that ID as proof of both identity and residency:
- driver’s license
- learner’s permit
- non-driver identification
Individuals without a State of Connecticut photo identification will need:
- A current, valid (not expired) government-issued photo identification for proof of identity
- One of the following documents with the individual’s name and current address as verification of Connecticut residency:
- Current utility bill
- Mortgage document
- Lease or rental agreement
(A post office box is not acceptable)

NOTE: During registration, the Connecticut adult education program must verify both identity and residency as outlined above. At the Pearson VUE Testing Center, the proctor only needs to confirm identity on the day of testing.
Fees to Take the 2014 GED® Test in Connecticut
There is a $13 registration fee to take the GED test. This fee includes the cost of the diploma.
*Veterans and test-takers under the age of 21 are exempt from this fee.

Accommodations for the GED® test are available for qualified individuals with a disability.
