ATTENDANCE POLICY
Dear Discovery Families;
Below are a few serious reminders regarding the Attendance Policy:
1. Always send a written note to school regarding your child’s absence.
2. Make sure we receive the note within 10 days of the absence.
3. Vacations are not considered excused absences, but always inform the teacher and principal of any days your child will not be in attendance.
4. The attendance policy set forth by the Connecticut State Department of Education requires school personnel to make referrals to either DCF or the court system (depending on the child's age) if a student is habitually absent without notes excusing his absences.
5. On the 6th and 12th days of unexcused absences, the district sends a truant officer to your home.
6. A phone call to our attendance line is appreciated but does not replace the required written note.
7. HOW TO AVOID a referral: Don't let unexcused absences pile up, send the notes.
8. NOTES: Please write your child's first and last name on the note. If hand written, make sure your writing is clear and legible.
9. If emailed, send to erosoff@bridgeportedu.net (Elen Rosoff, School Counselor who documents all excuses) and cc your child's teacher(s).
Below is an excerpt from the CODE OF CONDUCT:
"Absences one (1) through nine (9), are considered excused when the student’s parent/guardian approves such absence and submits appropriate documentation. For the tenth (10th) absence and all absences thereafter, a student’s absences from school are considered excused (ONLY) for the following reasons:
o A student’s illness * (Note: all student absences due to illness must be verified by an appropriately licensed medical professional to be deemed excused regardless of the length of absence)
o A student’s observance of a religious holiday
o A death in the student’s family or other emergency beyond the control of the student’s family
o A mandated court appearance (additional documentation required)
o The lack of transportation that is normally provided by a district other than the one the student attends (no parentaldocumentation is required for this reason)
o Extraordinary educational opportunities pre-approved by district administrators and in accordance with Connecticut StateDepartment of Education guidance"
Thank you for your adherence,
Discovery Staff
*Health & Safety Memo From City of Bridgeport and Bridgeport Board of Education
948 Main Street
Bridgeport, Ct. 06604
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Board of Education policy regarding school attendance when children are ill is clear and meant to protect all children as much as possible.
Children are NOT allowed to come to school if they have a fever, are vomiting or have diarrhea. If a child arrives or becomes ill at school the child must be picked up immediately. While it may be difficult for parents who are working it is mandatory to make arrangements for childcare when your child is ill. As a public school we are required to follow Board of Education guidelines on this matter. It is our goal to provide a healthy school environment for all our students.
Please update telephone numbers when changes are made so you can be reached in case of emergency or illness.
Children become sick quickly and infections spread easily among children. Please look for any of the symptoms listed below that would require your children to remain home for the day or to be removed from the school setting. When in doubt keep your child home.
FEVER - Temperature of 100.5 orally. MUST be fever free for 24 hours.
VOMITING – NO vomiting for 24 hours. Also nausea or severe stomachache.
DIARRHEA – Frequent loose or watery stools.
SORETHROAT – Keep home with fever. If Strep Throat, must be on antibiotics for 24 hours.
EARACHE – Children experience pain.
COUGH – Congested or productive cough; constant hacking cough.
RUNNY NOSE – Thick yellow or green discharge or needs frequent/constant wiping.
PINK EYE OR DISCHAGRE – Drainage or crust in AM. Doctor should be called.
HEAD LICE – ALL nits must be removed with treatment and parent must accompany child to school and child is checked by nurse.
BODY RASH – Unexplained cause or fever. Call Doctor.
RINGWORM – Must be under treatment and be covered.
Any questions please call the school nurse. Thank you for your cooperation.
