Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers of Bridgeport Public Schools:
This week’s weather forecast is projected to bring unusually high heat and humidity for this time of year. Meteorologists across Connecticut predict that conditions will sometimes become oppressive, leading to the interior of non-airconditioned buildings being hot and uncomfortable with a lack of air circulation. In some cases, these conditions could lead to or exacerbate danger to the health of our students and staff. After considering these factors and out of an abundance of caution,Wednesday, September 6th, and Thursday, September 7th will be one session days. During these two days, no afternoon preschool classes will be held. If you have a child in an after-school program in one of our schools, the program will be closed. Please get in touch with your after-school provider for more information. Our health officials advise that students and staff wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Each school is equipped with bottle filling stations, so please send students with refillable water bottles so they can always stay hydrated. All schools will allow water breaks and have a cooling plan if needed. Please note that outdoor activities will be limited to prevent excessive exposure to the heat. Finally, we will continue to monitor this situation closely, and if changes are made to the athletic schedule, coaches will communicate with teams regarding any changes affecting games and practices. We appreciate your partnership, support, and flexibility, as well as address weather-related challenges.
With gratitude,
Carmela M. Levy-David
Superintendent of Schools
